Background & context

Karl I. ließ 1644 drei irische Veteranenregimenter nach Schottland übersetzen. Sie wurden zum Kern der Streitmacht des Marquis of Montrose, der mit einer Handvoll Männer ein ganzes Königreich in Atem hielt - Tippermuir, Aberdeen, Inverlochy. Als katholische Fremde in einem presbyterianischen Land konnten sie auf Gnade kaum hoffen, was ihre Kampfweise erklärt. Nach Philiphaugh 1645 war der Feldzug vorbei, der Ruf der Brigade blieb.

On the tabletop

With 16 musketeers, four pikemen and a command group you field a regiment of the Irish Brigade that Charles I sent to Scotland in 1644, in Pike & Shotte. These veterans of the Thirty Years' War formed the core of the Marquis of Montrose's force, for example at Tippermuir, Aberdeen and Inverlochy. The many muskets give the unit firepower, while the few pikes protect it against cavalry. Together with Highland clans they form Montrose's Royalist army.
