Background & context

The Mongolian People's Republic had stood firmly at Moscow's side since the 1930s and provided mounted formations that rode along from Khalkhin Gol in 1939 to the Manchurian offensive of 1945. Their equipment was sparse: bolt-action rifle, sabre, their own horse. What they brought with them was horsemanship learned from early childhood and a frugality that let them cross steppe and desert where motorised formations ground to a halt. In the vast, trackless spaces of East Asia, cavalry therefore remained a sensible means of reconnaissance until the end of the war, considerably longer than in Europe.

On the tabletop

The five Mongolian riders with bolt-action rifles and sabres can join Soviet and Chinese armies of the Second World War in Bolt Action, and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in Bolt Action Korea. As light cavalry they scout, screen open flanks and strike at lightly protected targets such as gun crews. They suit games in wide, open country in particular, such as Khalkhin Gol in 1939 or Manchuria in 1945.
