Background & context

Anyone waging war around 1470 bought it in. Swiss pike squares, the first Landsknechts, Italian compagnie: mercenaries went wherever there was pay and changed employer without much fuss. Their equipment was correspondingly mixed: the long pike alongside the crossbow with pavise, plus the first generation of portable firearms, loud, slow and feared all the same. This mixture suits the Burgundian Wars, the Italian Wars and hired contingents in England alike.

On the tabletop

This box lets you assemble mercenary infantry of the late 15th century: 40 figures in all, including four command figures. The frames offer more options than figures: twelve crossbowmen with pavises, twelve handgunners and 18 pikemen, twelve of whom can carry polearms instead. Pikemen keep cavalry at bay, while crossbows and handguns shoot from behind the pavises. The force suits the Burgundian Wars and the Italian Wars.
