    Product details

    Background & context

An emir's striking power depended on his askar, the paid household troops he equipped himself and fed through the winter. In Syria and Egypt these formations consisted largely of Turkish Seljuks, recognisable by their three plaits and the sharbush fur cap, which Saladin too is said to have worn over his mail coif. Arab armoured horsemen fought with lance and sword, while Seljuk askaris carried the bow as well.

    On the tabletop

A Seljuk or Syrian emir of the 12th and 13th centuries relied on his askar, the paid household troops, and that is what these twelve heavy horsemen represent. With lance, spear, sword, axe or mace they engage crusaders at close quarters. Give them bow cases and shooting arms and they become Seljuk askari who shoot first; without bows they are Arab armoured cavalry. The fur sharbush cap marks the leaders.
