    Background & context

    Between the Third Crusade and the Barons' Wars, western Europe was an area of permanent conflict, and missile combat decided more engagements in it than the knightly lance. The crossbow was regarded as the weapon of mercenaries; Genoese, Gascons and Catalans hired themselves out with it all over Europe. England went the other way and from 1242 bound its free men to the bow. In the field both usually stood as a closed block between the spearmen.

    On the tabletop

    The 20 crossbowmen and ten archers provide the missile troops of your army between the late 12th and late 13th centuries. Together with spearmen they form the solid infantry block in the centre, behind which your knights reform after each charge. The crossbows already carry the stirrup for faster spanning, and the archers in gambesons can be mixed with the Dark Age Archers. Use them in the Crusades, the Barons' Wars or against Scots, Welsh and Irish.
