    Product details

    Background & context

Archers stood right at the front of the medieval order of battle and were seldom honoured for it all the same: they opened the fighting, fell back and came out again for the pursuit. Their value lay in numbers, because only hundreds of arrows a minute turned individual shots into an effect that made horses skittish and formations unsteady. Towns, monasteries and nobles therefore kept standing contingents of archers, often better paid than the rest of the foot.

    On the tabletop

The 32 archers are the bowmen of your medieval army in 28 mm scale. At the start they open the battle, shoot at approaching cavalry and foot, and pull back behind your own line as soon as close combat begins. Their effect comes from the sheer number of arrows, so keep the unit together as far as possible. Alternatively you can send some of them ahead of the main line as skirmishers to harass the enemy early.
