Description

The tank on which German anti-tank defences broke their teeth in 1940, three times over. Each hull can become the BEF, desert or Soviet version, and the turret takes either the 2-pounder or the 3-inch howitzer.

Background & context

The Matilda II was built as an escort tank for infantry: slow, but with frontal armour against which the German 3.7cm anti-tank gun could do nothing at Arras in 1940. The reputation lasted into the desert, where it was only checked by the 8.8cm guns of the Afrika Korps, levelled to fire horizontally. After that many of the remaining vehicles went to Australia and fought against Japanese positions in the jungle until 1945. No other British tank was in service throughout the entire war.

On the tabletop

Three Matilda IIs make a British, Australian or Soviet armoured platoon for Bolt Action. You build each tank in the version for the British Expeditionary Force in 1940, the Western Desert or the Red Army, and give it the 2-pounder against tanks or the 3-inch howitzer to support infantry. Slow but thickly armoured, the platoon leads your infantry's attack on an objective. It fits France, North Africa and the Far East, where the Matilda faced lighter Japanese tanks.
