Background & context

From the High Middle Ages, kings and lords granted many places the right to hold a regular market, and the market square became the centre of town life. Traders set up wooden stalls with awnings, trestle tables and barrels. In wartime, townsfolk and garrisons blocked the streets with carts, beams and barrels to hold off attackers. The second Battle of Lincoln in 1217 became known as the Lincoln Fair because of the plundering of the town that followed.

On the tabletop

As barricades, the pieces block alleys and gateways and give your foot troops cover from arrows and bolts. Build the market instead and you get a square full of stalls, barrels and crates that breaks lines of sight and slows movement through the town. Agree before the game whether the stalls are only obstacles or also the target of a looting party. In The Barons' War this fits the fight for Lincoln in 1217, in later periods the struggle for market towns during the Thirty Years' War.
