Background & context

Alasdair Mac Colla kam von den schottischen Inseln und schlug sich in den Kriegen der Drei Königreiche auf die Seite des Marquess of Montrose. Seine irischen Berufssoldaten gewannen zwischen 1644 und 1645 ein halbes Dutzend Schlachten gegen weit größere Heere des Covenant, darunter Tippermuir, Inverlochy und Kilsyth. Das Rezept war simpel und brutal: eine Salve auf kurze Distanz, Musketen weg, dann mit Schwert und Targe in die noch nicht nachgeladene Linie. Er selbst starb 1647 in Irland.

Alasdair Mac Colla with broadsword and targe, his bodyguards Dubhaltach MacPhee and Calum Mor MacInnes and a Highland hero with a two-handed sword lead your Highlanders into the charge in Pike & Shotte. He is credited with the Highland charge: a volley at close range, then muskets dropped and into the line with sword and targe before the enemy can reload, and that is exactly how you use the group on the table. Scenarios include Tippermuir, Inverlochy and Kilsyth alongside Montrose.
