Background & context

Göring did not want to hand his personnel over to the Heer when men were short everywhere in 1942. So the Luftwaffe raised ground formations of its own, 21 field divisions in the end. Radio operators, mechanics and airfield personnel were trained by flying officers who had no infantry experience themselves. The equipment was second-rate too, and the MG13 had long been regarded as obsolete in the Heer. The divisions fought nonetheless on the Eastern Front, in Italy and in Normandy, mostly with markedly higher losses than regular formations.

On the tabletop

Luftwaffe ground personnel turned infantry: this squad of ten metal figures in blue-grey uniform suits Bolt Action games from 1942 on the Eastern Front, in Italy and in Normandy. The MG13 team provides the firepower, the NCO and two men with submachine guns advance at close range, and three riflemen complete the squad. Two Panzerfausts give it a weapon against vehicles. The interchangeable heads let you make the men look different from one another.
