    Beschreibung

    The Luftwaffe Field Divisions were born out of necessity - non-flying Luftwaffe personnel were converted into ground infantry from 1941 onwards and sent to the front lines. Despite a lack of training, the soldiers in their blue-grey Luftwaffe uniforms fought on the Eastern Front, in Italy, and in Normandy. This set depicts a full 10-man squad, complete with an NCO, an LMG team, Panzerfaust gunners, and riflemen.

    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    After the German offensive in Russia stalled in 1941, non-flying Luftwaffe personnel were reorganized into infantry regiments, eventually forming 21 Luftwaffe Field Divisions, each with up to 12,500 men. The soldiers wore the characteristic blue-gray Luftwaffe uniform, supplemented by the long camouflaged M1942 coat or Zeltbahn capes. Despite their inferior training compared to regular army units, they fought on the Eastern Front, in Italy, and in Normandy, earning 18 Knight's Crosses in three years of front-line service. The average age of the soldiers was about 30 years - significantly older than most other front-line units.

    Einsatz im Spiel

    The Luftwaffe Field Division is suitable as a thematic infantry force for German armies in the mid to late war. The MG13 LMG team forms the backbone of the firepower, while the Panzerfaust gunners can also threaten armoured targets. The unit is ideally suited for integration into scenario-based armies that want to depict the special situation of these unusual Luftwaffe ground troops.
