    Background & context

    The Late Roman Empire of the 4th and 5th centuries was under enormous pressure from barbarian incursions, internal power struggles, and the increasing erosion of central state authority. The late Roman legions had changed significantly compared to the classical imperial period - heavy cavalry gained importance, while the infantry consisted of a colorful mixture of Limitanei, Comitatenses, and foederati.

    On the tabletop

    The 4 heavy cavalrymen make up exactly one point of mounted Hearthguard in SAGA. Among the 30 infantrymen, you put the armoured legionaries with the command group in the front rank, the unarmoured infantry from the 3 sprues fills the line behind, and archers and slingers shoot before the shield walls clash. Using the head sprue, you turn the same bodies into Goths, Late Romans or Romano-British and thereby decide which side you play. In Hail Caesar this is enough for foot, skirmishers and a small cavalry unit, which you can expand into a division with further boxes.
