    Background & context

    The late Roman infantry of the 4th and 5th centuries formed the backbone of an empire that was increasingly stressed under the pressure of the Migration Period. Many legionaries fought without full armor, equipped with shields, spears, the spatha, and the feared plumbatae - lead-weighted throwing darts.

    On the tabletop

    In the armies of late Rome much of the infantry fought without body armour, and these 36 figures show exactly those men. Place them behind your armoured line or field them as a unit of their own; shield, spear and spatha are enough for close combat. The command figures, by contrast, mostly wear armour and stand out from the rank and file. With 38 heads you can paint the same box as Late Romans, Arthurians, Early Byzantines or Goths.
