    Product details

    Background & context

In the late Roman Empire, mounted archers steadily gained in importance as Rome increasingly came into conflict with steppe peoples and the Sasanian Empire. Many units were recruited directly from the ranks of former enemies, bringing their equestrian techniques into Roman service. The Notitia Dignitatum, a late Roman document on army structure, lists nine units of light cavalry archers. Especially in the eastern part of the empire, numerous other such units are likely to have existed. The mounted archers were equipped with composite bows, bow cases, quivers, swords, and a small round shield on their left upper arm.

    On the tabletop

Twelve light horse archers give your Late Roman army a force that can match steppe peoples and the Sassanids. They shoot to the front, to the side and back over the horse's rump, so in games they circle the enemy and evade rather than charge. Because upper and lower bodies are separate, you can turn every rider in a different direction. A draco bearer can lead the unit, and sword and small round shield serve in close combat if needed.
