    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    In the late Roman Empire, mounted archers steadily gained in importance as Rome increasingly came into conflict with steppe peoples and the Sasanian Empire. Many units were recruited directly from the ranks of former enemies, bringing their equestrian techniques into Roman service. The Notitia Dignitatum, a late Roman document on army structure, lists nine units of light cavalry archers. Especially in the eastern part of the empire, numerous other such units are likely to have existed. The mounted archers were equipped with composite bows, bow cases, quivers, swords, and a small round shield on their left upper arm.

    Einsatz im Spiel

    Late Roman Horse Archers are used in Hail Caesar, SAGA, Pillage, and Lion Rampant as mobile cavalry archers for 4th-5th century Late Roman, Romano-British, or Gothic forces. In-game, the unit generates ranged pressure, outflanks cumbersome opponents, and can employ hit-and-run, flanking fire, and Parthian shot-like tactics. They should utilize distance, mobility, and open spaces rather than getting drawn into prolonged close combat.
