Product details

Background & context

When two Landsknecht formations met, the result was called Bad War: no ransoms, no prisoners, only a decision. In such encounters the work fell to the men of the front rank. Two-handed swords knocked pikes aside, halberds hauled opponents out of the tangle of shafts, and both were a craft with a high casualty rate that was paid accordingly. Landsknechts turned up all over Europe, from the Italian Wars to the service of Henry VIII.

On the tabletop

Doppelsöldner received double pay because they fought in the front rank, and these 24 figures represent exactly those men. Twelve carry the Zweihänder, twelve the halberd. In Pike & Shotte the two-handed swordsmen stand at the front of the pike blocks, form a unit of their own for special tasks or guard the colours. Armed with halberds, the Doppelsöldner fight just as much in the front rank when two Landsknecht bands meet in the Bad War.
