Background & context

Zweihänder von knapp zwei Metern Länge waren keine Paradewaffe, sondern Werkzeug: Wer damit in einen Pikenwald ging, sollte Schäfte beiseiteschlagen und eine Bresche für die eigene Reihe öffnen. Den Männern, die sich dafür meldeten, zahlte man doppelten Sold, daher der Name Doppelsöldner. Überlebt haben nicht viele, berühmt wurden sie trotzdem, etwa in der Schwarzen Bande mit ihren zweitausend Schwertkämpfern. Die Landsknechte selbst gehen auf Maximilian I. zurück, der den Schweizer Gewalthaufen etwas Eigenes entgegensetzen wollte.

On the tabletop

Six Landsknechts with two-handed swords on one sprue top up an unfinished mercenary unit in Pike & Shotte. The swords, almost two metres long, were used to beat aside the shafts in a hedge of pikes and open a gap for their own ranks. You therefore place these Doppelsöldner at the front of your pike block, or build a separate detachment from several sprues. The Black Band, with two thousand such swordsmen, became famous for it.
