Product details

Background & context

In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Landsknechts were central mercenary troops in the German-Roman and European regions. In addition to pike blocks, crossbows and arquebuses were used for skirmish lines, vanguards, and sieges. This box depicts these armed skirmishers as part of a Landsknecht troop from the Italian Wars and related conflicts.

On the tabletop

Crossbow or arquebus: each of the 30 Landsknechts can be built with either weapon. In Pike & Shotte they form a skirmish screen in front of the pike blocks or a unit of their own that shoots at the enemy from a distance, and they are just as useful in sieges. Crossbows represent the early years of the Italian Wars, arquebuses the period in which the firearm took over. Slashed sleeves and plumes give you plenty of room for strong colours.
