Background & context

Die Handbüchse war der Urahn aller Handfeuerwaffen: ein kurzes Rohr aus Bronze oder Eisen auf einem Holzschaft, gezündet mit glimmender Lunte am Zündloch. Im 15. Jahrhundert standen solche Schützen in jedem größeren Heer, meist hinter Pavesen oder auf einer Wagenburg. Schwere Stücke hängte man mit einem Haken an Mauer oder Bock, um den Rückstoß abzufangen. Erst das Luntenschloss machte daraus die handliche Arkebuse.

On the tabletop

Two Landsknechts serve a handgun, one of the smallest artillery pieces of all, too heavy for the shoulder and too small for a battery. In Pike & Shotte it gives your mercenary company supporting fire at range. Place it behind cover, against a wall or in a wagon fort, as was usual in the 15th century, when heavy pieces were hooked over a wall or trestle to take the recoil. Weapons like this, fitted with the matchlock, later became the handier arquebus.
