    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The farmstead of La Haye Sainte was a central strongpoint of the Allied position along the Brussels road during the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. A relatively small garrison of soldiers from the King's German Legion - an elite formation of German soldiers in British service - held the massively built property for hours against vastly superior French forces. When ammunition finally ran out, French infantrymen and sappers under Lieutenant Vieux broke through the main gate - the hand-to-hand combat in the courtyard is one of the bloodiest episodes of the entire campaign. The late arrival of Blücher's Prussians prevented the French tactical success from having a strategic impact.
