Product details

Background & context

Kura are storehouses with thick earthen walls, finished on the outside with white lime plaster. They were meant to protect rice, sake, seed and valuables from fire, damp and theft. Because Japanese towns and villages were built mostly of wood, a fireproof store was of great value to farmers, merchants and sake brewers. Many surviving kura date from the Edo period and still shape old town centres today.

On the tabletop

At 190 mm tall, the kura rises above the surrounding minka and blocks lines of sight across much of the table. Set the sake barrels beside it as loot or a supply objective for two groups to contest. Its narrow footprint of 80 x 120 mm fits into dense streets as well. As a merchant's store it combines with courtyard walls into a compound that ashigaru are keen to plunder.
