Background & context

Im Englischen Bürgerkrieg (1642-1652) war die Fahne das Regiment. Sie zeigte an, wo die Einheit stand, wenn der Pulverdampf die Sicht nahm, und wer sie verlor, hatte mehr verloren als ein Stück Seide. Royalistische Regimenter führten die Farbe ihres Obersten, dazu ein System aus Kreuzen, Rauten und Sinnsprüchen, an dem sich die einzelnen Kompanien unterscheiden ließen. Die Clubmen dagegen waren keine Armee, sondern Dorfgemeinschaften, die sich gegen beide Kriegsparteien zusammenrotteten und unter eigenen Bannern marschierten.

On the tabletop

The fourth sheet in the series adds the colours of the King's Lifeguard and the regiments of Sir Marmaduke Rawdon, the Marquis of Newcastle and John Talbot to your Royalists in Pike & Shotte, along with the Commonwealth flag and a Clubmen banner. Twelve flags are printed on the A4 sheet, each design once pristine and once battle-worn. Royalist companies were told apart by crosses and lozenges on their colonel's colour, so the flags make every unit recognisable on the table.
