Product details

Background & context

Sobieski was elected king in 1674, having made his name as Crown Hetman against Ottomans and Tatars. Chocim in 1673 made him famous, the relief of Vienna in 1683 immortal: his attack from the Kahlenberg, carried by the winged hussars, burst the Ottoman camp apart. The noble republic he led was an unwieldy construct of regional diets and magnates' armies, militarily brilliant and politically torn.

On the tabletop

John Sobieski led the Polish-Lithuanian army against Cossacks, Tatars, Ottomans, Swedes and Russians before relieving Vienna with his hussars in 1683. In Pike & Shotte you field the mounted resin figure as the commander of your Polish-Lithuanian army. From his position behind the lines he gives orders to cavalry and foot alike. He is particularly suited to scenarios around the relief of Vienna or the battle of Chocim.
