    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    In the late 19th century, Italy began colonizing African territories, including Eritrea. From the indigenous population, the Italians recruited so-called Askari battalions-native soldiers who served under Italian command, were equipped with Italian weapons, and were part of the regular colonial troops. The Askari were considered disciplined and battle-hardened fighters and were deployed in numerous colonial campaigns. During World War II, they offered active resistance until the fall of Italian East Africa in 1941 and are regarded as one of the most remarkable units in the early East African campaign.

    Einsatz im Spiel

    The Squad is suitable as a regular infantry unit in an Italian East Africa or North Africa army, adding thematic depth to historical campaign scenarios. The Ascari can be used as veteran infantry and are particularly well suited for Early-War setups depicting the East African campaign of 1940-1941. For North Africa scenarios, they complement a broadly based Italian army with an authentic colonial troop unit.
