Background & context

In the late 19th century, Italy began colonizing African territories, including Eritrea. From the indigenous population, the Italians recruited so-called Askari battalions-native soldiers who served under Italian command, were equipped with Italian weapons, and were part of the regular colonial troops. The Askari were considered disciplined and battle-hardened fighters and were deployed in numerous colonial campaigns. During World War II, they offered active resistance until the fall of Italian East Africa in 1941 and are regarded as one of the most remarkable units in the early East African campaign.

On the tabletop

Ascari made up most of the Italian troops in East Africa, with the Eritrean battalions having the longest tradition; they fought with Italian weapons until the colony fell in 1941. For Bolt Action the ten metal figures form a colonial squad for games in East Africa in 1940 and 1941, for example at Keren, where Ascari held a mountain position for eight weeks. Since Ascari also fought in North Africa, you can field the squad alongside Italian units in the desert as well.
