Product details

Background & context

The Alpini are among the oldest and most traditional mountain warfare troops in the world, having been trained and equipped for combat in rugged high mountains since the late 19th century. In World War II, these elite units were deployed on several fronts and were considered particularly resilient even under the most adverse conditions. The Breda M37 machine gun was one of the most powerful infantry weapons of the Italian armed forces at that time and, together with the medium mortar, formed the backbone of heavy fire support at the platoon level. Medics and command personnel supplemented the combat power by providing leadership and support immediately behind the firing line.

On the tabletop

As the basis of an Alpini heavy weapons platoon, the box brings a Breda M37 machine gun and a medium mortar, each with a three-man crew. The air-cooled Breda lays down heavy fire on infantry in the open. The mortar fires in an arc and becomes more accurate as long as its target does not move. The two officers can lead any type of platoon, the radio operator works as an observer and the medic tends a wounded comrade. Three order dice are included so you can field the teams straight away.
