    Background & context

    Five hundred years lay between the campaigns of conquest of the 7th century and the fighting for Jerusalem, and yet the basic deployment remained remarkably constant: spearmen in front, archers behind, swordsmen as the striking force. From al-Andalus to Syria, emirs and caliphs drew on the same troop types, supplemented by regional peculiarities of dress and shield. Drums and trumpets set the pace and made the approach audible from far off.

    On the tabletop

    These 48 figures let you field the foot troops of an Islamic army, from the conquests of the 7th century to the age of the Crusades. During assembly you give each man a spear, sword or bow, creating a block of spearmen in front with archers behind. Standard bearers, trumpeters and drummers form the command group that accompanies the noisy advance. The army fits al-Andalus as well as Syria, and the 132 heads keep the ranks from looking uniform.
