Product details

Background & context

In the mountain valleys of Japan in the 15th and 16th centuries, many villages lived from small terraced fields, timber and charcoal. During the Sengoku period, the armies of rival daimyō passed through such valleys again and again, demanding rice, horses and porters. Many ashigaru came from these very villages and returned to their fields after a campaign. Some communities formed leagues to defend themselves against raiders.

On the tabletop

Spread the buildings loosely across a slope with fields and paths in between, and your table shows a village in the hinterland for ashigaru to raid or samurai to defend. With the roofs off, you place figures right inside the rooms and show who holds each house. The food store makes a good objective, as whoever secures the supplies keeps their force fed. Add fences, a gateway and walkways from the other Inaka kits to grow the village.
