Product details

Background & context

In Sengoku-period Japan, rice was food, tax and the measure of wealth all at once, and estates were rated in koku of rice. Lowland farmsteads lay between irrigated fields and were reached over dykes and walkways. Rice stores often stood on posts to protect the harvest from damp and rodents. For the armies of the daimyō, the harvest of such farms was an important target, whether for supplies or to weaken the enemy.

On the tabletop

The farmstead fills half the table and gives you a place for one side to defend and the other to storm. From the watchtower your shooters see far across the fields, while the walkways channel movement between the houses. The rice store makes a main objective, and the carts become loot that has to be hauled away. Add the gateway, fences and more walkways from the Inaka range to grow it into a fortified village.
