Product details

Background & context

Wooden shields, called tate in Japanese, were set up in front of lines of shooters in the Sengoku period to stop arrows and bullets. After firearms arrived around 1543, ashigaru with arquebuses often fought behind such screens. Villages and camps protected themselves with fences of timber and bamboo, with lanterns burning at night. Stocks of rice and equipment were kept in crates and straw bales.

On the tabletop

The extra fences close gaps around the village gateway or enclose another farmstead. The standing shields give ashigaru with arquebuses cover while they reload. Crates outside the fence offer attackers a step to climb over, while inside they become supplies worth guarding. Without the Inaka: Gateway kit, use the pieces as loose cover between houses.
