Product details

Background & context

Hokora are small Shinto shrines where local people worshipped a local kami, such as the guardian spirit of a field, a spring or a mountain. They are found along roadsides, in villages, in fields and within larger shrine complexes. Farmers left rice, sake or flowers there as offerings. Many of these small wooden shrines were looked after for generations and rebuilt again and again.

On the tabletop

Spread the three shrines between houses or at crossroads so a village on your table looks lived in. With a footprint of 60 x 60 mm they do not block routes but give a single figure some cover. As objectives they mark points that a group of ashigaru must hold or search. In a larger temple precinct they stand next to a temizuya and the main hall.
