Background & context

Ein Clan zog nicht als Regiment ins Feld, sondern als Gemeinschaft mit klarer Rangordnung. Vorn stand der Tacksman mit Breitschwert, Targe und Pistolen, dahinter drängten Pächter und Landlose mit dem, was Küche und Scheune hergaben. Der Highland Charge lebte von dieser Masse: eine Salve auf kurze Distanz, dann das Plaid weg und rein in den Gegner. Montrose gewann damit zwischen 1644 und 1645 ein halbes Dutzend Schlachten.

On the tabletop

At the very back of the clan came the poorest men, armed with knives, dirks, clubs and ancient firearms. These six Highlanders, with contents that may vary, fill the rear ranks of your clan in Pike & Shotte, while the better equipped men stand at the front. The Highland charge relied on numbers: one volley at close range, then off with the plaid and straight into the enemy. Montrose won several battles with such clans between 1644 and 1645.
