Product details

Background & context

The name travelled with the mercenaries: the Hajduks came from the Hungarian and Balkan borderlands into the Polish-Lithuanian army, where Stefan Báthory formed them into a regular body of foot in the late 16th century. They wore coats of a single colour, fired the arquebus and reached for sabre or axe as soon as anyone came close enough. Their task was a sober one: shoot, throw the enemy into disorder, so that the cavalry can break through. Over the course of the 17th century, musket regiments of western cut gradually displaced them.

On the tabletop

For Pike & Shotte the twenty hajduks, including a command group of officer, standard bearer and musician, give you a complete unit of Polish infantry. With their arquebuses they wear the enemy down before your cavalry charges, and afterwards they hold the ground gained. For close combat they carry only short swords. Musket troops in the western style later replaced them, so they belong to the period before that. A flag sheet and bases are included.
