    Background & context

    In 376 Gothic groups on the Danube asked to be admitted to the empire, fleeing the Huns. Two years later they destroyed an imperial army at Adrianople, Emperor Valens with it. After that Goths sometimes served as federates in Roman armies and sometimes faced them; in 410 Alaric sacked Rome. Their warriors were often equipped little differently from their opponents, with helmets, mail and oval shields. From these groups came the Visigothic kingdom in Gaul and Spain and the Ostrogothic kingdom in Italy.

    On the tabletop

    For Hail Caesar the 30 foot figures make a warband with skirmishers: the unarmoured warriors from the 3 sprues as the mass, the armoured men and the command group as the front rank around the leader, archers and slingers in loose order ahead. The 4 heavy cavalry are the noble retinue that leads the charge. In SAGA and Pillage the box is enough for a complete warband. The LBMS sheet supplies Gothic shield designs and banners so the figures stand clearly apart from Roman units.
