Description

The PaK 40 was the gun that from 1942 opened up almost any Allied tank, provided it stood where nobody expected it. Four metal crewmen in winter kit serve it, and the oval MDF base supplies the emplacement too.

Background & context

When the T-34s appeared before Moscow, the Wehrmacht had nothing that would reliably penetrate them. The answer was the 7.5cm PaK 40, in series production from 1942 and, with over twenty thousand built by the end of the war, the most numerous German anti-tank gun. Its problem was weight: at just under one and a half tonnes it could no longer be manhandled in mud or deep snow. Anyone who had dug it in fought on that spot and did not shift again.

On the tabletop

As a heavy anti-tank gun, the PaK 40 belongs in the artillery platoon of German lists in Bolt Action and is towed by most half-tracks. It penetrates almost any Allied armour at normal ranges and is at its most dangerous when it waits well camouflaged on a flank. The four gunners wear winter clothing, so the position suits games in the snow, for instance against T-34s. In deep snow the heavy gun can hardly be shifted, so pick its spot carefully beforehand.
