Hintergrund & Einordnung

The winter battles on the Eastern Front presented the Wehrmacht with extreme challenges. It was only after the catastrophic losses of the first winter in 1941/42 that special winter equipment was issued on a larger scale. Until then, soldiers resorted to improvised camouflage, blankets, scarves, and privately acquired fur coats - hence the characteristic, uneven "rag-tag" look. Equipped with white or reversible camouflage overlays, snow hoods, felt boots, and MG42s, the grenadiers fought from the Soviet Union to the Ardennes in 1944/45.

German Winter Grenadiers are a thematically strong choice for Eastern Front winter scenarios. They form solid infantry squads and combine well with other winter accessories such as snow-covered terrain.
