Product details

Background & context

The Gebirgsjäger traced their origins to the Alpenkorps of the First World War, where German and Austrian mountain soldiers held the passes against the Italian Alpini. The edelweiss on cap and sleeve became the badge of all mountain troops. In the Second World War their formations ended up wherever maps showed contour lines instead of roads: Narvik near the Arctic Circle, the mountain roads of Crete, the Caucasus in 1942 right up to Elbrus, and later the positions in the Italian Apennines.

On the tabletop

In Bolt Action the Gebirgsjäger are German infantry for difficult terrain: slopes, woods and snow. Their ten metal figures are enough for a full squad that you field in winter games and mountain scenarios. Historically they fought in Poland, Norway, on Crete, in the Balkans and in the Soviet Union, and towards the end of the war often alongside regular infantry in particularly important sectors. The edelweiss on cap and collar makes them easy to recognise on the table.
