Background & context

The Tokarev 4M of 1931 was clearly a stopgap: four water-cooled Maxim machine guns on a turntable, far too heavy together to be moved on foot. So the mount went onto the load bed of a lorry, and it was in this form that it faced the German attack in 1941. It remained in service until 1945, while American M17 half-tracks gradually took over the more modern roles. Against low-flying ground-attack aircraft, volume of fire mattered more than calibre in any case.

On the tabletop

Four water-cooled Maxim guns on a pedestal turn this GAZ into the mobile air defence of your Soviet army in Bolt Action. The lorry keeps pace with your troops and protects them from low-flying ground-attack aircraft, and on the ground it can turn its weight of fire on infantry too. When the Germans attacked in 1941 it was the only mobile anti-aircraft weapon the Red Army had in numbers, and it remained in service until 1945. Achtung Panzer! covers it as well.
