Description

French line infantry in the late cut: shako, short coat, campaign kit. The plastic set covers the years in which Napoleon's army had to be raised from scratch three times between Moscow and Waterloo.

Background & context

In 1812 the Grande Armée marched into Russia with more than half a million men and brought back barely a tenth of them. What took the field again in Saxony in 1813 was largely made up of young conscripts known as Marie-Louises, thinly trained but surprisingly tough in the line. The same troops held the campaign in France together in 1814 and a year later were in the field once more at Ligny and Waterloo. The shako of the 1812 dress regulations remained their distinguishing mark to the end.

On the tabletop

The 42 figures wear the shako and short coat of the 1812 regulations and so cover Russia, Saxony in 1813, France in 1814 and Waterloo. 36 men with an officer, standard bearer and drummer form the battalion, and six skirmishers spread out in front. On the table they can also stand in for the young conscripts of 1813, who held firm in the line. Two flags are included, and several battalions build up a division.
