Background & context

From 1808 the French battalion was made up of six companies: four fusilier companies, one voltigeur company and one grenadier company under a chef de bataillon. This organisation carried the Grande Armée through Spain, Russia and the campaigns of 1813 and 1814. The voltigeurs went ahead of the column as skirmishers, while the grenadiers held the right flank and with it the place of honour in the line.

On the tabletop

36 figures marching or attacking plus eight skirmishers from the elite companies make a French battalion of 1807 to 1814. The skirmishers go ahead of the column as voltigeurs, and the grenadiers belong on the right flank. You form the battalion in column to move quickly and in line to hold a position. Further battalions, cavalry and artillery turn it into a brigade for Spain, Russia or the campaigns of 1813 and 1814.
