    Background & context

The An XI system arose from 1803 out of the wish to simplify the artillery: fewer calibres, and a single 6-pounder in place of Gribeauval's 4- and 8-pounders. The changeover got stuck halfway because the foundries could not keep up and the old stocks stayed in service. So in the campaigns up to 1812 both systems stood side by side in the same corps, a nuisance for supply and a gain for mobility.

    On the tabletop

The An XI system lets you field the lighter French field artillery of 1804 to 1812. You build the three guns as 6-pounders for direct fire or as howitzers that lob shells onto troops behind walls and in hollows. The 15 gunners wear the uniform from before the Bardin regulations, with shakos both covered and uncovered. Placed next to a Gribeauval battery, your army shows how both systems served side by side within the same corps.
