    Background & context

In the years after 1805 the capote, the soldier's long greatcoat, became standard issue in the Grande Armée, and the men did not wear it only in the cold. On the march and in action it spared the expensive blue habit, which was meant for the parade ground; that is why eyewitness accounts from Eylau to Waterloo show whole battalions in greatcoats. Only shoulder straps, collar and shako then still revealed whether it was line, light infantry or Young Guard in front of you. For the painter that means one large area of colour, a few accents, and the unit is done.

    On the tabletop

The 28 figures in greatcoats show a French battalion as it usually looked in the field: in the long coat that spared the parade uniform. The three frames build line infantry, light infantry or Young Guard, with four skirmishers and a command group. In games the battalion advances in column with the skirmishers spread out ahead. From Eylau to 1814 the troops fit any French army; bases are not included.
