Background & context

In 1916 the poilu wore horizon blue and the Adrian helmet, in 1940 khaki; the helmet stayed almost the same, and the Berthier rifle was still in service too. Between the two dates stands an army that had won the First World War at enormous cost and was preparing for a repeat behind the Maginot Line. The Tirailleurs Sénégalais stood at the front in both wars, and the African American Harlem Hellfighters fought in 1918 in French equipment under French command, because their own army did not want to let them go to the front.

On the tabletop

This box serves two world wars: you build the 35 Frenchmen as poilus from 1916 onwards with Lebel rifle and Chauchat, or as soldiers of the 1940 campaign with Berthier and the FM 24/29 light machine gun. Rifles and heads suffice for all figures either way. The light machine gun gives each section its firepower, and VB rifle grenades reach enemies behind cover. Colonial infantry such as the Senegalese tirailleurs or the American Harlem Hellfighters can also be portrayed.
