    Background & context

At the outbreak of World War II, the French army was among the best-equipped armed forces in Europe-numerically strong, with modern tank and artillery technology. The rapid collapse of the front in 1940 was due less to a lack of fighting spirit than to structural leadership problems and an inability to respond to the dynamic German war of maneuver. Numerous infantry units nevertheless offered bitter resistance and fought bravely in rearguard actions to enable the Allied retreat across the English Channel. The fate of French soldiers after the armistice varied: some continued to fight in the resistance or alongside the Allies, while others found themselves in the ranks of the Vichy forces.

    On the tabletop

In 1940 the French army was considered the most powerful in the world, and its infantry often stood stubbornly against the German war of movement. These ten metal figures form a section: an NCO, a two-man light machine gun team whose loader carries a pistol, a soldier with a VB rifle grenade launcher and six riflemen. The machine gun provides the firepower, and the VB launcher lobs grenades over cover. In Bolt Action you use it to hold positions and objectives.
