    Product details

    Background & context

The Chassepot rifle of 1866 was clearly superior to the Prussian needle gun and had a considerably longer reach, which is why French tactics in 1870 relied entirely on the stationary firefight. Only that was of little use as long as the Prussian field artillery, with its rifled steel barrels, fired from distances no rifle could reach. At Wörth and Gravelotte this combination cost the French infantry its best battalions.

    On the tabletop

This box focuses on the standing firefight of the French infantry in 1870/71: 25 men fire the Chassepot standing and kneeling, and ten more are advancing. Three command figures lead the line, and you can use the fallen as casualty markers or on scenic bases. In games the firing line holds a position and uses the range of its rifle against advancing German infantry. Against the long-ranged Prussian artillery it needs cover.
