Product details

Background & context

The war of 1870/71 caught a French army that was technically ahead and organisationally behind. The Chassepot rifle shot further and faster than the Prussian needle gun, but the German staffs got more men to the right place more quickly. After Sedan the Second Empire was finished, and the Third Republic emerged from the wreckage. The red trousers of the line infantry stayed in use for decades afterwards.

On the tabletop

The 38 Frenchmen represent line infantry of the war of 1870/71. You build the 25 riflemen advancing with levelled rifles for the attack or with shouldered arms on the march, while the ten tirailleurs fire and load in open order ahead of them. A command group leads the unit. In games you make use of the Chassepot's longer range before your line moves forward, facing Prussian or Bavarian infantry.
