Background & context

Serjeant kommt vom lateinischen serviens, der Dienende - gemeint war der Berufskrieger ohne Ritterwürde, der für Sold oder ein kleines Lehen kämpfte. In Rüstung und Bewaffnung stand er dem Ritter oft kaum nach, nur Pferd und Adel fehlten. Besonders gefragt waren die Armbrustschützen: König Johann holte sich seine aus Flandern und dem Poitou und bezahlte sie besser als jeden englischen Speerträger. Männer wie Fawkes de Breauté stiegen aus dieser Schicht bis zum Kastellan und Sheriff auf.

On the tabletop

Serjeants are the professional fighters between knight and peasant, and the two frames build up to 24 of them. With spear and shield they form a shield wall, with falchion, halberd or voulge they fight hand to hand. Some men get crossbows and shoot at the enemy from the second rank, as King John's Flemish mercenaries did. In The Barons' War they join knights on foot and on horse to form a complete retinue.
