Product details

Background & context

Across Europe, farms stored hay and fodder over the summer so their animals would get through the winter. Barns were therefore part of every sizeable farm and usually stood close to stables and farmhouse. Farmsteads became strongpoints in many battles, La Haye Sainte at Waterloo in 1815 being a well-known case. In Normandy in 1944, too, troops fought over individual farms whose buildings offered shelter and observation.

On the tabletop

Place the barn at the edge of a yard where it forms a farmstead together with your other buildings. Depending on how you set it, it hides parts of the yard and steers movement around itself. Troops waiting behind it are harder for the enemy to pick out. In World War II it suits fights over farms, and in the gunpowder era the farmsteads that often became the focus of a battle.
