    Yusuf ibn Taschfin führte 1086 ein almoravidisches Heer über die Meerenge, um den bedrängten Taifa-Königen gegen Kastilien beizustehen, und blieb gleich als Herrscher da. Seine Garde rekrutierte sich aus Kriegern Nordafrikas, die dem Emir persönlich unterstanden statt einem Stadtfürsten. Auf dem Feld standen sie in dichten Speerreihen, ein Block, der nicht wich, wenn die kastilische Reiterei anritt. Für El Cid und seine Zeitgenossen war das ein neuer Gegnertyp.

    On the tabletop

    Dense ranks of spearmen, with bowmen standing behind them, formed the core of the Almoravid army. With the eight metal figures of the Black Guard you set up such a spear line for Hail Caesar or SAGA that withstands the charge of Castilian cavalry. Behind it you place your bow-armed units. The Guard answered to Yusuf ibn Tashfin in person, who crossed the strait to al-Andalus in 1086.
