    Background & context

    Every German infantry division of 1939 had a bicycle squadron in its reconnaissance battalion, and many regiments had bicycle platoons of their own as well. The army bicycle was heavy, robust and needed neither fuel nor workshop, and on the roads of Poland and France a platoon like this made faster progress than any marching column. The bicycles were left at the edge of the battle, then the men fought as ordinary riflemen. With motorisation and the mud of the East the bicycle lost importance, but it never disappeared entirely from the Wehrmacht right up to 1945.

    On the tabletop

    In the campaigns in Poland, France and the Soviet Union the Wehrmacht used bicycle troops for reconnaissance, liaison and rapid advances. In Bolt Action the five cyclists give your early-war German infantry high mobility at the start of the game. They reach objectives and cover before the firefight really begins, then dismount and fight on as infantry. For recce and rifle platoons, this saves you a transport vehicle.
