Background & context

Die Wehrmacht war 1939 und 1940 weit weniger motorisiert, als die Bilder der Panzerdivisionen vermuten lassen. Radfahrkompanien gehörten bei den Infanteriedivisionen zur Aufklärungsabteilung und legten auf Landstraßen mühelos 70 Kilometer am Tag zurück - lautlos, ohne Sprit und ohne Werkstatt. In Polen und Frankreich erreichten sie oft als erste einen Ort; erst im Schlamm der Ostfront verlor das Fahrrad seinen Vorteil.

On the tabletop

These five bicycles represent the Bolt Action option of equipping infantry units with bicycles, which gives your squads extra mobility. They are intended for German infantry of the early war years, who often travelled in cyclist companies. Since one bicycle looks much like another, they also suit other armies. Lean them against house walls or place them next to dismounted soldiers to show the option on the table.
