    Background & context

    When the legions left Britain around 410, Saxons, Angles, Jutes and Frisians came from the North Sea coast, first as mercenaries of British lords, then as settlers with claims of their own. The monk Gildas lamented their raids, and legend names Hengist and Horsa as the first leaders in Kent. Two centuries of small-scale warfare pushed the Romano-Britons west as far as Wales and Cornwall. Out of the warbands of this period grew the kingdoms of Kent, Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria.

    On the tabletop

    Unarmoured but carrying shield, spear and javelin, these 36 warriors make up the bulk of an early Saxon host in Britain. For each man you choose between a small buckler for parrying and a larger round shield, and between helmet, cap or bare head. In play the band relies on a quick rush with thrown javelins. Combined with Victrix's armoured Early Saxons, whose heads and weapons are interchangeable, you get an army to face the Romano-Britons.
