Background & context

On 16 December 1944 the Wehrmacht launched its last major offensive in the West in the Ardennes, in fog that kept the Allied air forces on the ground. American units were overrun or encircled, and in Bastogne the garrison held out for days without resupply. The battle was decided less by materiel than by formations that did not abandon their crossroads despite cold and encirclement. By the end of January 1945 the front was back where it had started.

On the tabletop

36 infantrymen in winter clothing stand ready here for you to divide among the squads of the rifle platoon. The officer leads as HQ, you place the NCO at his side or at the head of a squad, and the medic follows the forward squads. Two MMG teams and the mortar team form the heavy weapons, the 105mm howitzer fires indirectly from right at the back, and the artillery observer needs a spot up front with a good view. The Easy Eight holds the centre, the M18 Hellcat waits on the flank for enemy tanks. The army is at its strongest in defence, for instance around a snow-covered village.
